Opening Reception: Transformation Through Transportation by Cathedral Arts Project at JAXPORT Gallery

"When our class visited JAXPORT, we were able to see and learn about many new and unfamiliar things. For each student different things sparked interest or inspiration. Some were inspired by the rail cars and train tracks, some the marsh land while others were inspired by the ships and cranes. Students sketched that which inspired them and discussed the subject of this inspiration with each other.

We brought each of our individual experiences and inspirations into the classroom and what emerged was an overarching idea of textures, shapes and patterns that were a part of the many sights. In order to highlight these textures and patterns, the students created printmaking blocks by carving their designs into foam sheets. They then used a traditional printing process to print these blocks into the pieces you see on display. With this process, the image can be printed multiple times.

Q&A: Is it okay to wear ballet slippers to and from ballet class?

Question by : Is it okay to wear ballet slippers to and from ballet class?
My son is starting ballet class and we ordered him some toddler ballet shoes. Is it okay for him to wear them across our apartment parking lot to the car, then from the car across the gym’s parking lot into the gym? Or should he wear his normal shoes, then change at the gym? He’ll be wearing knee high black socks under the slippers; I wasn’t sure if that mattered. Thanks!

Q&A: Just learned a new ballet step in a begininning class. is there a more typical way of doing this?

Question by lusia: Just learned a new ballet step in a begininning class. is there a more typical way of doing this?
Hi, just starting a ballet class. I’m trying to practice a routine, which I have to have down before my next class and there’s one part I can’t remember. I thought, perhaps, there could be a more common way of teaching/doing this ballet move, and dancers may just know which way it should go.
It’s a quick three step thing:
So, start in first position, slide to dancer’s right into second, then slide left foot into fifth w/ left heel in front and one more slide to fifth w/ left heel in back. Or it could be the other way around; left heel in back, then in front. That’s the question. Which order? front, back OR back, front? Anybody know this??
(through this, the right arm goes up to high fifth and circlies back, down, while the other arm goes only to second)
can you remember how you first learned this?
It would be AMAZING if someone could help. thanks!
any guesses, thoughts would be appreciated

Can I start pointe without having a ballet instructor?

Question by : Can I start pointe without having a ballet instructor?
I have been dancing ballet on and off for the past five years and have had lessons again for the past six months. But they have been at a dance class at my college. I don’t really have a dance instructor ad I would really like to go on pointe. I have good control in my feet and ankles and just general body structure while I dance. Do you think I could manage learning pointe on my own? An I ready for pointe shoes?
